Adjacent Possible

The theoretical microbiologist Stuart Kaufmann first defined the adjacent possible as:

“The adjacent possible consists of all those molecular species that are not members of the actual, but are one reaction step away from the actual.” (Kaufman 2000)

Kaufman was writing about the expansion of molecular populations but in 'A Duet of Cyborg and Dancer: Creative Autogenesis' we apply the adjacent possible to the expansion of the choreographic or creative population, i.e. all the creative ideas we have had so far in the course of creating a performance piece.
